As I mentioned in a previous post, a great benefit to having a long engagement is having plenty of time to DIY some aspects of your wedding! DIY projects will add unique and creative aspects to your special day, and can save you a TON of money in the long run.
In this post I am including some lovely Pinsperation for amazing wedding-related DIY projects that I will be sure to try!
Many people have asked my fiance and I why we are waiting so long to get married. Frankly, we are young and in love and feel no need to rush such a wonderful time in our lives! So today I am sharing 10 reasons why I think it’s great to have a long engagement…
You’ll have more time to save
Obviously, the more time you have before you need to start making payments, the more money you will be able to put aside prior! This allows you to outline a savings plan that you can get used to now, so you won’t be feeling as much financial pressure down the line!
You will be less stressed
This is a time that most people have dreamed about their entire life! With a long engagement, you won’t have to start planning anything right away; giving yourself plenty of time to enjoy the moment and celebrate with loved ones.
You’ll know who your friends are
Face it, relationships change over time. When you first get engaged, there may be many people who congratulate you and send you messages, cards, gifts, etc., but then you never hear from them again. Also, you may simply lose touch with some people who you were once close with. A long engagement means that you’ll have plenty of time to figure out exactly who will be there for you in the long run, which will result in the best bridal party and the most enjoyable guest list!
More time for physical changes
This is one of every bride’s biggest concerns – being the most beautiful version of themselves on their wedding day! Whether you are trying to lose weight, clear up your skin, or grow your hair – these things take time. Longer engagements will allow you to do these things the healthy way, and developing routines that work for you.
There will be less pressure on the bridal party
Just like you, your bridal party will have to put time, money, and effort into your wedding. More time means you can spread out your events (bachelorette party, showers, etc.) as much as you want, allowing your ‘maids time to work these into their schedule, save money, and not feel like their life revolves around your big day!
Vendors are more likely to be available
This one is pretty straight forward. Many people have to work around the availability of venues and vendors. When you are planning 2+ years in advance, it is much more likely that your dream reception venue will be available on your date of choice! In addition, this gives you plenty of time to work out details with each and every vendor to ensure a smooth wedding day with no surprises.
More time to adjust to change
For me, just getting used to the idea that I will be married is crazy! Not only is marriage a huge lifestyle change, but there will also be a ton of paperwork for name changes, insurance and tax deductions, etc. It is a lot to consider, and having more time will make this less stressful in the long run.
Allows for inevitable life events
Whether it’s moving, a new job, or an injury – these things happen. Shortly after getting engaged, my fiancé lost his job when his entire department got laid off. The stress of finding a new job was enough, I would have felt awful adding to that by rushing to plan our wedding. Luckily, we had given ourselves a long wedding planning timeline, which provided him with more than enough time to find a new job. In the end, we avoided a lot of extra stress over a bad situation.
What better way to save more money and add a personal touch to your wedding than to DIY! You’ll need plenty of time to search for ideas and practice these projects before your wedding. I’m already planning on making my own invitations and floral arrangements and I plan on doing my research and practicing a TON to make sure they look professional!
You won’t have to settle on anything because you’re rushing
More than anything, you want this to be YOUR day and it should live up to all of your dreams and expectations. You won’t want to move your wedding to another day to secure a venue, say no to your dream dress because you don’t love how it looks on your current body, or have to trim some important people off of your guest list because you can’t afford it. Overall, by having a long engagement you are guaranteeing that you will have plenty of time to perfect each and every detail of your big day.
